On Watch

By Karen Piper

Quietly waiting

Ever preparing

On watch standing

School safety sharing

Often unnoticed

Behind the red trucks

Until they’re needed

Motor vehicles struck

Or gasping for air

Help my wife’s dying!

Their life saving care

With relief crying

Lessons in courage

Running into the fire

Never discouraged

To us they inspire

We all mourn their loss

What words do we say?

Too precious the cost

On our hearts it weighs

How do we thank you?

For your sacrifice

For service so true

A raise would be nice
